Editor’s Note: Hello dear readers, we hope you are having the best holiday season yet! We are wrapping up 2013 by sharing some of our favorite real weddings of the year, and this stunning Philadelphia wedding was impossible not to choose. It’s an event dear to our hearts as the bride is none other than our wonderful Junebug member photographer, Susan Stripling , and her love is fellow photographer, Cliff Mautner . These beautiful photos were captured by Mary-Beth Tyson Photography and Daniel Kudish of Davina+Daniel , and once we saw them, they quickly won our hearts!

The Couple: Susan and Cliff

The Wedding: 4.17.2013 – Front and Palmer , Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The Goals: We didn’t want to have everyone else’s wedding. Cliff has been a photographer for over 30 years and I’ve been shooting weddings for 12 years. But we didn’t want to be different just for the sake of being different. With both of us entering our second marriage we wanted to honor each other and our children from our previous marriages as well as our family and friends. Our main priority was just to have everyone together – it was really that simple. Something beautiful and honest, simple, timeless, and enjoyable.

The Design: I’ve had 12 years of watching other people design their weddings and I knew very clearly what I wanted to do, and Cliff felt the same. Along with Brian Kappra of Evantine Design we chose the clear ghost chairs and long farm tables. I provided an image of what we wanted the chuppah to look like. And other than that? It was all Evantine. We spent a few hours with Brian choosing the china and I hired a calligrapher to do the place settings but otherwise the execution of the vision was all him. I think the only direction we gave him was really a lot of fire and we don’t really like flowers. Simple, clean, dramatic, and nary a mason jar in sight.

The Look: My style inspiration was simply to find something beautiful. I had no clear idea what I was looking for, but when Debbie Walp at The Bridal Garden showed me the Monique Lhuillier “Candy” dress during a trunk sale that was it – it was simply the prettiest dress I had ever seen. Once the dress was decided everything came together really easily. I hunted down the Rodarte hair stars that I’d been admiring for a few years and found the perfect McQueen clutch – I’m a huge Alexander McQueen fan! I got a beautiful wrap from Carol Hannah and was all set! My husband wore an incredible suit from Tom James – a dear friends husband works for Tom James and he helped us with the whole process. He looked AMAZING. Our daughters wore Jim Hjelm , Watters , and Amsale and they chose their own dresses and colors. I really didn’t care what they wore as long as they were happy!

The Moments: The day was beautiful and the decor and details impeccable, but while lovely, wedding planning details do not make a marriage. The biggest success was that we could officially call each other family. Everything else pales in comparison. That being said, coming down the aisle towards Cliff was one of the most beautiful moments of my life. I was supposed to walk to an instrumental version of “Into the Mystic” but Cliff had our band show up early, set up hidden away behind the chuppah, and they sang “Falling Slowly” (our song) as I walked towards him. That was a moment I will never forget. Seeing my youngest daughter cry during the ceremony because she was so choked up. Dancing with my father. Dancing with my brother. All of our friends who came from so far to be near us. It was really, truly, honestly perfect.

Jessie & Jesse’s New Mexico Wedding from Daran Photography

“Love, joy, and passion.”  Three more than perfect words to describe Jessie & Jesse’s beautiful wedding day.  Albuquerque is a city rich in history, scenery, and romance, but that’s only the beginning. Taking the cultures of both the Bride and Groom and crafting their wedding around those backgrounds proves to be a beautiful take on tradition.  Every image captured by Daran Wu (Daran Photography) left us in complete and utter awe.  Join us as we share this lovely affair below.

The love story

The bride Jessie Lo and the groom Jesse Acker-Johnson met at the Val Tidone Music Festival, a beautiful, picturesque hill town near Milano in Italy.

The Bride is a classical pianist , and the Groom is a classical guitarist. She first paid attention to him because the awkward coincidence of their identical names – Jessie & Jesse. However,  after their first conversation, they both knew they were struck hard by Cupid’s arrow (you can call it love at first sight, that kind of things really do happen)!

The rest of the festival, the Groom would play his guitar for the Bride whenever and wherever he got a chance to. Their encounter in Italy could be described as a romantic movie plot, and laid the foundation of the love story of their lives.

After Italy, the Bride had to go back to Vienna, where she was pursuing her musical career/degree. The Groom had to go back to New Mexico, and was moving to the Bay Area in California. The following 8 years of their relationship was mostly long distance. It was a difficult yet most rewarding time – a true test for love, trust, perseverance, patience, and faith.

They are each others’ best friend and are learning how to love each other more and be a better partner every single day.

Thoughts from the photographer

Daran Wu: I’ve been shooting weddings in different countries for many years, and Jessie & Jesse’s wedding is definitely one of the most memorable events I’ve ever captured.  Albuquerqu is recognized as one of the most culturally diversed cities in the States, and it’s certainly a very special place to host a wedding. Multiculturalism is something I find truly inspiring, and Jessie & Jesse’s wedding was a perfect combination of Asian and Western traditions.

I remember seeing the Groom, Jesse, playing the guitar casually outside of his place.  I was not only attracted by the beautiful melody and his great skills, but also enjoyed the peace and joy in the air.

The wedding speeches were so natural and heartwarming.  These speeches truly showed strong friendship and love, and that’s exactly what I think weddings should be all about.

“I’m willing to do my best for her”

Daran Wu: During this trip to New Mexico, something that really touched my heart was Jesse’s willingness to always try his very best for his Bride Jessie.  He kept on asking me if there was anything he could do to coordinate with me to make things better.  Shooting pre-wedding photos for 2 days was a crazy thing to Jesse, but after the photo sessions he said: “Jessie is not an ordinary bride, I’m willing to do my best for her, and I did it!

Thoughts from the Bride

Jessie: Before my two international weddings, I was searching through many photographers online. When I saw Daran ‘s work, I knew this is exactly the style that I desire. I made a risky move and hired him and his assistant to fly out to New Mexico for our US wedding. It turned out to be the RIGHT decision of a lifetime.

They are not only spot-on professional, but also incredibly warm, fun, life-loving, interesting, curious, and dedicated people. They are constantly inspired by their surrounding and were able to react to the environment. It was great fun shooting with them during the process.

I’d also like to mention Vivian Wu , my make up artist that I hired from Canada to come to New Mexico, was also a fantastic decision. She was such a loving support and a great spirit to have around during the sometimes stressful and intense wedding preparation. She was quick, professional, considerate, helpful, nice, and fun! I would like to say it made the bride’s job so much easier to have her around.

When you look at Daran’s photos, you can see that he sees things in a different angle, which is sometimes pleasantly surprising and artistic. His way of story-telling is one of the kind.

I have attended many other weddings and I have to say that this team is currently unbeatable. Many Americans guests are still giving me nice feedback about my team and appreciate their work a lot.

Daran also shot my Taiwan wedding later on and also did a great job. All these memories become such vivid and beautiful pictures under his lenses.  My wedding guests, my family, my husband, and I had a very pleasant experience with Daran and love the great memories he has forever saved for us.

Arisa & Rod Romantic Anniversary Session (from Mikako Chiba)

Many say that marriage is not really about what you receive, but what you give, and that true love is the best motivation for self improvement.   Arisa & Rod’s relationship is a beautiful example of such powerful love.  “I have learned so much from her and she challenges me daily to be a better man“, says Rod.  “I love him and I’m also learning from him“, says Arisa.

Arisa and Rod decided to do something special to commemorate their 4 years of love and marriage, so they had the talented Mikako Chiba Photography take these gorgeous anniversary photos for them. Through her soft, natural, and romantic style, Mikako Chiba captured every moment of love beautifully.  We just can’t get enough of these sweet and adorable scenes. Join us as we share Arisa & Rod’s lovely story below.

Arisa & Rod Romantic Anniversary Session (from Mikako Chiba)

Arisa & Rod’s love story

How they met?

Arisa and Rod met at a restaurant in Victoria. It was love for the first sight for Rodney but not for Arisa.

How long have they been married?

They have been married for just over 4 years.

What they love the most about each other?

Arisa: Rodney accepts who I am. Doesn’t judge me. He is always positive and supportive. I love that about him and I’m also learning from him. He is fun to be with and makes me laugh all the time.

Rod: Arisa also accepts me for who I am which is not easy to do. She is the most caring and thoughtful person I have ever met. I have learned so much from her and she challenges me daily to be a better man.

What’s one common goal or dream that they share?

They both love being healthy and trying new things together. Having a healthy, happy, loving and caring relationship is always one of our main goals. One common dream is to eventually get a bulldog.

Arisa & Rod Romantic Anniversary Session (from Mikako Chiba)

Inspiration behind this session

Mikako Chiba: Arisa decided to wear her wedding dress on the day of the Anniversary shoot.  With this in mind, part of my inspiration for this shoot was to capture the unchanging love between the two of them from the day they got married.  And the other inspiration for me was to provide them with memories of their Wedding Anniversary that they can look back at in the future.

Thoughts from the photographer

Mikako Chiba: When Arisa and Rod got married, Rod had just recovered from a health condition.  He had lost a lot of weight and they decided not to have a Wedding Photographer.  It was something that they had both regretted, not having a lot of pictures taken at their wedding.  This anniversary shoot would help to make up for that a bit in addition to celebrating their wedding anniversary.

About Mikako Chiba Photography

Mikako Chiba: I grew up in Kesennuma, Japan and moved to Vancouver in 2005. I was originally a Software Developer but I had a natural interest for photography and art in general. It was just something I did in my spare time to express my feelings. When I finally realized that my true passion was in photography, I made the transition to becoming a Wedding Photographer and have never looked back. I am very grateful that I can do what I love for a living.

As a Wedding Photographer, I have a photojournalistic approach. I place a lot of value in creating a bond/trust with my clients such that they are comfortable enough to be natural in front of my lenses. This allows me to become their voice and capture photographs that speak to people.
