What three adjectives best describe your wedding day? Love, family, the magic of NYC.

Was there a decor theme that ran through your wedding? What was the inspiration for that particular idea and how did it reflect you as a couple?
From Event Designer Maya Kalman of SWANK Productions : Barb and Carl were joining two families with 5 children ranging from 6 – 14. This wedding was both a declaration of love and romance, and a celebration of the sacred bond of the new family. This family loves to laugh, loves to spend time together, and is very expressive. They wanted this wedding to feel bright, casual, but still chic. The colors were inspired by the California poppy. They also wanted it to be family friendly so they decided on a Sunday brunch wedding.

Barbara and Carl both grew up in New York and have lived in Northern California for years. They still feel a strong emotional connection to their NYC roots; many family members still live in the NY Metro area.

What were some of the different ways you used decor elements to create the beautiful, cohesive event you were envisioning?
From Barbara and Carl: We wanted something light, bright, creative, and bold, so we emphasized yellows and oranges. Our appetizers were designed to reflect the neighborhoods and flavors of New York: mini sausage heroes from Little Italy, street vendor hot dogs, etc. Our wedding invitation drew on a NY Times headline theme, in which we were the featured article.

From Event Designer Maya Kalman: We started the “NYC experience” with the couples invitations which we designed as the cover of the New York Times. The wedding’s design concept came from wanting the feel of a chic Sunday brunch – black, white, yellow and orange were the color story. We chose a bright white loft venue which was perfect for our Sunday brunch menu. It also had a gorgeous deck so the ceremony could be outside under the noon day sun. The bright white loft with gorgeous views of NYC was decorated with bright yellow and bright orange ranunculus flowers. The white tables were rimmed with a chic wide black and white ribbon to evoke that city chic attitude.

To continue the ‘NYC experience, cocktail hour was an homage to different NYC neighborhoods. Chinatown, Lower East Side, Coney island, etc. Trays were made of subway maps of the area and the food was the local favorite.

To evoke the bond of family, we created custom napkins with our Family rules printed on them. Instead of the typical guest book or sign-in area we created a family tree where each guest ink stamped their finger print as a leaf on the tree as well as their signature so that Barb and Carl would forever have the complete vision of who was at their wedding the day they started their new family tree. During the ceremony, Barb was walked down the aisle by her parents who had recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary, and during the reception a special anniversary cake was presented to them to cut. Barbara’s father has since passed away, and they were so grateful to have been able to celebrate this special event with him, and to have the photos and video to remember him by.

To bring in the couple’s love of games and fun we came up with the idea of heart shaped jigsaw puzzles. We had Carla David Design create heart shaped puzzles which we placed at each seat with one piece missing that piece was the escort card which was picked up from a table that read, “with your piece you complete our puzzle.” To keep things looking light airy, the ceilings were also covered with HUGE, ROUND white balloons.

Where did you choose to hold your wedding, and how did the location influence your decor decisions?
From Barbara and Carl: We held our wedding at Studio 450. We found this site online from our Mill Valley home. We committed sight/site unseen and were thrilled! Studio 450 provided a bright white canvas, with tons of character, amazing views, and a unique rooftop space. It was at once open and intimate, like us. The open plan, white walls and floors, and wonderful, old, large windows allowed the city in as a major participant in the day.

Looking back, do you have a favorite project or successful decor idea from your wedding? Tell us what you loved about it!
From Barbara and Carl: We picked unique artists to put together this wedding from the wedding planner to the photographer, the dress designer, the videographer, the caterer, etc. We chose creative individuals based largely on an intuitive sense of connection with them. We trusted their ability to help define and manifest our vision of who we are as both a couple and a family.

We crafted a unique ceremony that included not just our own personal marriage vows, but a separate “ceremony within a ceremony” in which the five children committed to their new family and were each given a simple gold band to symbolize that commitment.

Editor’s Note: Melissa and Kevin’s San Francisco wedding was a favorite of ours for so many reasons, and since we’ve seen so many of their wedding photos pop up on Pinterest since we originally published it back in April it looks like many of you felt the same way! This couple is stunning, her dress is to-die-for, and that dog! Oh my goodness, what more can I say? Sit back, take a peek, and enjoy!

The Goals: First and foremost, Melissa and Kevin were determined to have a wedding that was fun for their guests; they wanted every guest to have the time of their lives! And in hindsight, the couple felt that the best decision they made was keeping the guest list at100. The cozy number let them have time to enjoy and appreciate each person there!

The Design: The couple designed a timeless, classic wedding; a reflection of themselves rather than a showcase of the latest trends. They chose a color palette that featured warm and romantic tones – blush, ivory, champagne, and gold, and black because it “added chicness to a very pretty color scheme.” The elegance continued in the sparkly Palace Hotel ballroom with lush, romantic garden roses and other blossoms in blush tones and an ivory fondant covered cake with a whimsical topper of gold branches and pearl blossoms.

The Look: The beautiful bride chose a look that was very much in keeping with her everyday style, just dressed up for a party! She kept things classic with a gorgeous Vera Wang gown that she describes as “whimsical, with boning for structure and and a tulle skirt that brought out the princess in me…which I believe every bride should feel like on her wedding day!” She completed her look with pearl encrusted Valentino shoes and romantic, soft make-up with gorgeous lashes. For her maids, she selected very chic black dresses and let their individual personalities guide their jewelry selection.

The Moments: The romantic day was filled with amazing moments, but Melissa had a few that particularly resonated. She said, “The moment that most stands out was seeing each other as I came down the aisle during our ceremony. We did a ‘first look’ before the wedding, and we were both nervous that it might take away from the surprise of seeing each other for the first time during our wedding ceremony, but we worried for no reason. That moment will forever be one of the most amazing times in our lives!” Other treasured memories are the words spoken by their officiant at their ceremony; their first dance when “time literally stood still;” and having a quiet moment drinking champagne, just the two of them, in the room where their ceremony had taken place just moments before.

Favorite Wedding Bouquets of 2012 From Junebug Member Florists

This has been such a fun week! Beautiful flowers wedding bouquets have been pouring into my inbox from our Junebug member florists, and it’s like Christmas came early! Each designer sent their personal favorite bouquet of the year and a little information about their creations. And lucky you, because I’m going to regift, and send all the beauty and inspiration to you!
Bella Rugosa: I loved designing this for my bride who wanted a bold mix of pink florals in a tight pave design with lots of textural interest.

Fiore Blossoms: Pure white peonies, ruffled garden roses, and dark viburnum berries were full of wintery romance. This bouquet, created for a winter bride, was so gorgeous in the snow!

Floressence: I made this bouquet in June for a super sweet bride who sent me a few inspiration images and then let me roam free in the wholesale market. Poppies were just starting to burst from their casings, while overripe peonies and garden roses carried the sweet promise of warmer days. The whole bouquet totters on the cusp of spring and summer, freshness and decay – and pretty much says everything I love about flowers.

Garden Party Flowers: This bouquet epitomizes seasonal and sustainable. It was designed for a bride who embraced those ideals and loved the palette and texture of late summer’s bounty and glory. I loved the challenge of creating a piece without flower blooms to showcase nature’s beauty in every season.

Isari: A romantic loose spring bouquet with blush roses, anemones, poppies, trailing jasmine vines, pieris, ranunculus, dusty miller foliages and scented geranium bound with pale nude silk ribbon.

Kathy Wright & Co.: Composite flowers unto themselves are not anything new. Since I was a very young floral designer, I have been pulling the petals off poor unsuspecting blooms, and making them into larger than life specimens. I love the new and unusual shapes and textures they take on in their newly enlarged state, and find that I get the most amazing responses from my clients as they truly have never seen anything like it before.

Composite flowers are time consuming and also can wear on your patience, as each individual petal must be put into position. But the end result is pretty cool, and for some brides, it is the perfect solution to finding a unique statement to compliment their beautiful wedding dress! This composite rose was crafted from the petals of a white Anastasia rose.

Krista Jon: I love the simplicity and subtle edginess of the color fade. We did quite a few ombré bouquets this year, but this peach one maintained such an elegant and soft feel with a slight nod to the unexpected…I also happen to adore the bride on a personal level, so you can imagine the love that was put into each bloom for this entire wedding.

Peony & Plum: This romantic bouquet had all the classic English flowers…garden roses, delphinium, Queen Anne’s lace, and ranunculus. The end result was feminine and so summery!

Willow & Bloom: Ashley and Chad are New Yorkers with southern roots that were planning a pacific northwest wedding. We loved incorporating flowers and foliage in Ashley’s bouquet that reflected each of these locations. We used elegant white roses and callas (so chic New York!), southern magnolia foliage, and northwest thistles and blackberry.

Wisteria Lane: I love this bouquet because it is unusual – the raw cotton and the dried pods juxtaposed next to the frilly garden rose are a striking combination!

Woodland Flowers: This is a bridal bouquet from a spring wedding that we did this year that incorporated some our favorite flowers: black-centered anemones, pink peonies, ranunculus and tulips. We also loved the owl timepiece the bride Kate chose for her bouquet handle that represented her steam punk theme.

Anniversary Photo Shoot of Junebug’s Own Emily and Ryan – by Ryan Ray Photography

I love anniversary photo shoots – they’re such a sweet way to celebrate your marriage and relationship as it grows and changes over the years. Today we have an absolutely darling one, that is especially close to our hearts, because the darling, beaming, stylish gal you see in these photos is our very own Junebug Membership Administrator, Emily. She and her husband Ryan Flynn (a talented wedding photographer and Junebug member himself) celebrated their 3rd wedding anniversary with this wonderful set of photos by Ryan Ray Photography which capture their personalities and spirit perfectly. Emily is an absolutely invaluable member of our Junebug team and a joy to be around. She keeps us organized, on-track, and laughing like crazy – a great combination! I simply don’t know what we would do without her, so I am over-the-moon to get to share these beautiful and meaningful photos here on What Junebug Loves!

From Emily: When our photos were taken at our wedding 3 years ago, never could I image the joy, endless laughter and immense love that would deepen over the years for my husband, Ryan.

They say your wedding is the happiest day of your life. It is, but in my opinion I think the days, months and years that follow take that particular prize. You study, grow and learn more about your spouse. You take comfort in knowing that they will love you unconditionally and aren’t going anywhere, whether you have a good day or a bad day. You begin to understand more clearly why this person was placed in your life, why you chose to do life together. Without Ryan, I am not complete. He is my other half. He inspires me. He challenges me. He makes me want to be better. We are connected.

My sweet husband decided to surprise me with a photo shoot for our third anniversary with one of the kindest film photographers we know, Ryan Ray . As my husband is a photographer as well , he was really looking forward to seeing someone else’s photographic vision. We were already headed to Texas for Ryan’s little sister’s wedding, so it was the perfect opportunity.

About the surprise. Ryan is not the best at holding in surprises because he just gets too darn excited and can’t wait to spill every last bean. He also wisely knew that I’d want time to plan my outfits before the shoot. So, one night a couple weeks before we left, he came down the stairs and sat next to me on the couch, put his arm around me and said he knew that I’d been wanting recent pictures of us, and that we hadn’t had any taken since our wedding, so SURPRISE he planned a photo shoot for us for our anniversary. I was thrilled, and, to be honest, a bit nervous, since I am kind of shy in front of a camera.

Ryan Ray brought his sweet wife, Cary, along and we got to cuddle with their huge Mastiff that we so badly wanted to put in our suitcase and take home. We all felt like instant friends, and we absolutely loved the photos. It was perfect getting to find a photographer who we connected with in an artistic and a personal way.

From photographer Ryan Ray : Ryan and Emily quickly became two of my favorite people – kindred spirits. My wife and I talked about how much we wished they lived closer to us. Ryan is such an incredible photographer – it was an honor to photograph him. And Emily couldn’t be any sweeter. They shared so much joy, and Emily’s smile could light up any room. I could photograph them all day, any day. It was definitely an afternoon I will not soon forget. Happy anniversary, Ryan and Emily. It is such a blessing to know you.
