The Goals: from bride Jessica – Truly and I have both thrown events before, and we knew what it required to not only a well styled event, but also care and thought to each guests’ experience and comfort. We wanted a setting and style that expressed who we are while creating an environment that made our guest feel like they were venturing into an old-world, luxurious country get-away. Our overall design theme and feel was shabby chic with vintage touches. And we were extremely lucky in the weather department. We were blessed with the amazing weather that comes the day before a hurricane – blue skies, and fluffy clouds, though with a bit of humidity!

The Vision: Our wedding was at the stunning Skinner Barn property in Waitsfield, Vermont. Our color palette was light pink, springy greens, buttery yellows, and cream. We had plenty of DIY projects going on from a hand-sewn burlap table cover made out of re-purposed coffee been bags (which took me longer than two weekends’ worth of full days to complete!) to a hand crafted gorgeous hot air balloon that was suspended over our dessert bar. It was inspired by Truly’s proposal to me in a hot air balloon that was over 5000′ in the air, on the previous July 4th.

Our ceremony took place outdoors on the beautiful rolling grounds of the Skinner Barn. As the space is so open, I wanted something that gave a sense of a path to the ceremony location, without being to imposing.  I decided on simple white pin wheels, which created the most amazing trail leading to the alter. To my utter surprise and delight, and thanks to my cousin Courtney’s hard work and talent, they all actually moved on the wedding day! I also loved the asymmetrical birch arch we were married under.

For the reception, the main room was decorated with hanging candle lite lanterns between the various barn bays, the dance floor was framed with a giant dramatic fabric chandelier expertly hung by our florist and her husband. Additionally, the columns throughout the barn were decorated with tall blooming branches. Each table was set up with mix-matched candelabra set upon various stacked books, and draped with vines and flowers. The tables were covered in various layers of linen; we used a mint green cake stand; and served a variety of fun country treats like snowball inspired cupcakes and whoopie pies. Our place cards were hand-stamped menus on Penguin Books Postcards. And, we asked all of our bar and dinner staff and the band to dress the part. The ladies were in retro dresses while the men wore suspenders, bow ties, fedoras.

The Look: Believe it or not, I was pretty much a blank slate to start. The only thing I did know without a doubt was that I would be wearing a pair Christian Louboutins ! I found my dress at Priscilla of Boston , and the absolutely irony is that I nicknamed my dress the Hurricane Dress, as on one side of the dress, there is a large twist of fabric much like a hurricane looks.  As it turns out, our wedding was the day before Hurricane Irene hit Vermont! Once I had my dress, the rest of my look fell into place. I wore my hair up with a feather fascinator and kept my jewelry simple with a pair of drop earrings and a cuff bracelet. I felt like between my dress, which was definitely on the couture side of things, along with my big hair of pinned curls, there was no need to complicate the look with lots of jewelry and bling. I left the bling to my Louboutins!

My MOH and only bridesmaid, wore a gorgeous light pink dress from Priscilla of Boston and a feather fascinator. And my second cousins, who I totally adore, were my flower girl and ringbearer. They both wore bright shades of yellow and had fun accessories.

The Moments: When our old-school limo drove up, I almost broke down into tears. Up to that point, it just felt like I was getting ready for a big party. It made me realize it was our wedding day! And of course, our vows that we wrote ended up being so special. When it was Truly’s turn, he actually blanked out on the vows he had spent nine months writing. He ended up speaking from the heart and it was just so genuine, honest and humorous!

Some of our guests had planned a surprise for me which was an incredibly fun moment. I’m a die-hard Steelers fan, and Steelers fans have a tradition of aggressively waving our Terrible Towels. Truly and I had agreed on no sports at the wedding. A group of my friends felt differently, and when we walked in to the reception, half the room was waving Terrible Towels at us!

One of the most meaningful moments of the day was a somewhat unusual tribute to my late mother. When I was growing up, she would always tease me that I’d have to have a few polkas at our wedding, as she was a touch Polish. I was mortified and pleaded with her not to force such a thing. She has since passed away. During the planning, it dawned on me that the very thing that I had so badly wanted no part of as a child, was the very thing that I wanted to do! I asked the entire room to dance the polka with us in her memory, and everyone rushed to the dance floor to honor her in a joyful way.

Finally, toward the end of our night, Truly and I drifted off to an empty table while everyone was dancing. We just sat down together, not speaking, simply taking everything in.  Out of nowhere, my flower girl, ring bearer and two other little cousins came over to us, sitting in our laps. The six of us just sat there while they lay their heads on us, so happy.  It was an amazing moment, one that will forever be in my heart.

What were the top three priorities for you in planning your wedding? Venue, Entertainment and Food

What wedding traditions or cultural traditions did you incorporated into your wedding and what did they mean to you? We got married in the catholic church and while the full mass was much longer than a simple ceremony, it was so worth it – no need to rush this part of your special day!

Family involvement was very important to us. We included them in any way possible. We did the traditional first dance, father-daughter dance and mother-son dance. A lot of weddings we have attended have mixed the father-daughter and mother-son dance together as one. I am so happy we each got our own moment to dance with our parents – I actually wish we had bride/father-in-law and groom/mother-in-law dances too! This day only comes along once and I wanted our parents to be involved as much as possible. Another family touch we included was hanging photos of all of our married family members at the reception. We had about 25 photos between both of our families. EVERYONE loved it! I think it also made people feel more involved in the wedding and excited to share our special day with us.

Were there any places where you broke the rules in your wedding planning? We broke quite a few rules, but it was all worth it for the big day!

Alina Pizzano Fall 2012 Wedding Dress Collection

Alina Pizzano Fall 2012 Wedding Dress Collection

I’m always a fan of the creativity that Los Angeles wedding dress designer and Junebug member Alina Pizzano brings to her creations. She just released her new fall 2012 wedding dress collection, inspired by Morocco, and once again I’m won over. That lace! Here are just few of the dresses from her new collection, and and lucky for any of you in the market for a wedding dress… Alina is having a fall sale ! Receive 25% off any gown, purchased from the salon or online from September 17 – 24.

From Alina: This Collection was inspired by Morocco…by the warm colors, the design, the flow of the fabrics. This inspiration all started with a lace swatch that I designed the “Nasira” gown around that really brought me to the world of beautiful Moroccan geometry, that I wanted to update and bring to bridal.

I just realized that somehow, in the busyness of life and the fast pace of this wedding-planning-land I live in, it’s been far too long since we checked in with what that astoundingly talented bridal accessory designer Myra Callan has been creating over at Twigs & Honey … A book! New accessory collections! About a million pieces that I’d love to own! I’m so glad I took a moment to comb through all the prettiness on her site – time well spent, any day. Thanks Myra!
