Junebug’s Best Wedding Color Ideas – Blue, Gray and Red for a Rainy Day!

This was one of my favorite wedding color inspiration boards to put together because of the unique rainy day theme of the wedding! Originally published on May 15, 2009, the tranquil blue, gray and red color combination is just so nice !

The lovely bride-to-be and Junebug reader Charisse emailed me for a little help finding inspiration for her somewhat unusual wedding theme. Charisse and her fiance love the calm and quiet of rainy days and are hoping to plan a rainy-day themed wedding (regardless of the day’s actual weather!) with a blue-gray color palette that includes some splashes of Charisse’s favorite color, red. “I don’t want it to be depressing or dreary but very calm with an unexpected punch of red. Romantic, very romantic, and elegant with a little bit of bling.”

What a fun project this was pulling some ideas together! My focus with this inspiration board was incorporating natural elements like feathers, bird’s nests, branches, twigs and fern motifs to help bring the feeling of the outdoors, in. The soft blues and grays look like the sky on a cloudy day and keep everything feeling delicate, romantic and serene. Here you are Miss Charisse, enjoy…

Whimsical Philadelphia Wedding with Photography by Susan Stripling – Maureen and Michael

Whimsical Philadelphia Wedding with Photography by Susan Stripling – Maureen and Michael

Maureen and Michael’s chic Philadelphia wedding was full of romance, emotion and family, and their spectacular photography by Susan Stripling dramatically captures the essence of what this couple is about – love.

Whimsical Philadelphia Wedding with Photography by Susan Stripling – Maureen and Michael

The Goals: Both Maureen and Michael were brought up in the Catholic Church, so having a traditional ceremony at St. John’s Evangelist Catholic Church honored their beliefs and approach to marriage. After the ceremony they held a whimsical cocktail hour and wedding reception at the playful Please Touch Museum , and their main goal was to share their incredible love story with their guests in a truly personal way. “We wanted it to be a perfect mix of class, elegance, history, romance and playfulness! We wanted our guests to walk away from our wedding and say “wow, not only was that was the best wedding ever, but it was SO Maureen & Mike!”

The Design: Maureen and Michael wanted their guests to begin the wedding experience from the moment they received their save-the-dates, so the couple worked with The Papery of Philadelphia to create invitations and wedding paper designs in heavy bamboo card stock that expressed the warm, and whimsical feeling of the day. To create a romantic atmosphere at the wedding itself, Maureen and Michael used a custom wedding logo and their favorite wedding quote, “Marry me today and every day…” throughout their decor. After the wedding ceremony, the cocktail hour began with rides on an antique carousel from the early 1900s, and moved on to a reception decorated with bright purple, gold, brown, bright green, magenta and burgundy wedding colors. Each table was decorated with brightly colored flowers, large vases of branches and hanging candles, and even the wedding cake coordinated with its decorations of branches, purple flowers and their wedding quote.

The Look: Maureen had dreamed of her wedding look for years and years – it was soft and romantic with a bit of an edge. She chose a gorgeous strapless wedding dress by Vera Wang and accessorized it with a sparkling Amsale dresses and the Michael and his groomsmen wore classic Calvin Klein tuxedos with vests and ties. Following the tradition of something old, new, borrowed and blue, Maureen had her florist wrap the sleeve of her mother’s wedding dress around her bridal bouquet, she wore a new Waterford Rosery, borrowed her grandmother’s Holy Spirit pin which she pinned inside her dress, and completed the package with a blue bridal garter.

The Moments: Maureen loved the moments of first seeing her father and then her groom, and was filled with emotion during the reading of their personal wedding vows. The newlywed couple had a perfectly romantic first kiss at the altar, and loved looking out after being pronounced husband and wife, and “being surrounded by so much love, loyalty and friendship.”

For their first dance the couple chose the Michael Buble song You And I which Maureen and Michael said, “represents finding the person of your dreams, finding strength in each other and feeling like you could conquer the world together!” So romantic!

The Pros: To learn about the whole team of wedding professionals that contributed to this wedding, please see Maureen and Michael’s page in our real wedding library.

Junebug’s Favorite Weddings Ideas – Romantic Bicycle Inspired Wedding Board

We love this colorful board filled with vintage bicycle wedding ideas , made just for a reader and originally featured on April 6, 2010! Too cute…

Junebug reader Ashley recently wrote in asking for a little help in bringing together some ideas for her upcoming Santa Cruz area wedding, and as you’ll soon see why, I just couldn’t resist giving it a go! She and her fiancé want a romantic and slightly rustic look, with a fun wedding color palette that will pop next to the monotone cliff sides and lighten the mood if the weather itself isn’t bright and sunny. But most importantly, they want to incorporate their passion for restoring vintage bicycles and make it an intricate part of their wedding! Fun! Here is an inspiration board and a few ideas to get you going Ashley…

Junebug’s Favorite Wedding Ideas – Wedding Bouquet Centerpieces!

Even looking back at some of our earliest posts, the ideas are still just as useful today! I love all of these creative ways to display your wedding bouquet during the reception , originally featured back on August 15, 2007.

Junebug’s Favorite Wedding Ideas – Wedding Bouquet Centerpieces!

Flowers, and especially the bridal bouquet, are such a beautiful, traditional and iconic part of a wedding. Just like a veil, a bouquet can instantly transform a woman into a bride. Once the ceremony is over, the photographs have been taken and the dinner, dancing and fun have begun, what to do with the bouquet is a question that always seems to come up. One solution that’s a sure fire winner is to use the bridal party bouquets as table centerpieces. I love these elegant ways of showcasing the bouquets in vases or on cake stands. The flowers are lifted off the table and protected, you get extra use out of the most beautiful flowers of the day, and the look is simply stunning!

Junebug’s Favorite Wedding Ideas – Pies and Tarts as Wedding Cake Alternative

Another favorite idea, originally featured on November 30, 2008, is serving pies and tarts as wedding cake alternatives ! Such a creative and delicious option if pie is your personal dessert of choice…

In honor of today being the day after election day, I’m thinking about something near and dear to our country’s heart, something with history and home town goodness, something very, very American, pie!

When it comes to weddings, there’s no rule that says you must have a traditional wedding cake. If pies and tarts are your favorite desserts, why not serve them instead? A table loaded with a selection of fresh berry, fruit, nut, or cream pies will delight your guests and bring your personality to forefront. Find pretty cake stands and platters to create your display, make lovely labels telling guests about their options, offer whipped cream, ice cream or candied nuts to add as toppings, and send guests home with recipe card favors detailing your favorite family pie recipe. Yum!
